Texas Rowing signs seven student-athletes to National Letters of Intent

AUSTIN, Texas – University of Texas head rowing coach Carie Graves announced Monday the signings of seven student-athletes to National Letters of Intent.

Emily Walker (St. Catherine’s Ontario), Emma Whalen (Hingham, Mass.), Gia Doonan (Marion, Mass.), Sofia Arend (Chevy Chase, Md.), Pippa Loveard (Wellington, New Zealand), Brooke Bode (Dallas, Texas) and Tayla Daniel (Riverside, Conn.) will join the Longhorns’ rowing program in August of 2013.

“We’re thrilled to secure an excellent recruiting class,” Graves said. “We are looking forward to working with these accomplished rowers in the fall of 2013.”

Emily Walker - St. Catherine’s, Ontario (Holy Cross Catholic Secondary School)
• Coxed the Canadian women's 8 to gold at the 2012 CANAMMEX championships in Mexico
• 2010 Royal Canadian Henley double gold medalist in the Jr. Women’s 4+ and Jr. Women’s 8 (undefeated season)
• Placed second in the junior women’s lightweight 8+ at the 2011 Royal Canadian Henley
• Placed sixth at the 2012 Head of the Charles (junior women’s 4+)
• Coxswain for the 2010 FISA World Master's Championships coxed Denmark Roskil Roklub M 4+, and mixed 8
• 2010 Ontario Summer Games silver medal in the coxed quad
• Captain of her high school curling team in 2011 and 2012

Emma Whalen - Hingham, Mass. (Hingham)
• Helped Hingham H.S. to the 2012 Massachusetts state championship
• Has rowed in the first varsity eight boat since her junior year
• Member of the Debate team at Hingham H.S. and four-year honor roll member

Gia Doonan - Marion, Mass. (Tabor Academy)
• Standout three-sport athlete at Tabor Academy
• Helped Tabor Academy’s first boat to fifth-place finishes at the All-New England Championships as a sophomore and junior
• Helped Tabor Academy’s basketball team win the Class A New England Prep Schools title as a freshman and sophomore and to third place as a junior
• Named to the New Bedford Standard-Times Super Team in track and field (triple jump, long jump, 400 meters)

Sofia Arend – Chevy Chase, Md. (Bethesda-Chevy Chase H.S.)
• Placed third at the World Indoor Rowing Championship (junior women’s lightweight 2000m erg)
• Maryland state champion, junior 4+
• Took first place at the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Interscholastic Rowing Association regatta (varsity 8+)
• First team All-Metropolitan Rowing team as a junior
• Member of the French Honors Society, pursuing an international baccalaureate diploma

Pippa Loveard – Wellington, New Zealand (Wellington Girls School)
• Won gold in the U-18 Pair, silver in the U-18 double and bronze in the U-18 quad at the 2012 North Island Championships
• Won gold in the U-18 Double and silver in the U-18 quad at the 2012 Maadi Cup
• Won silver in the U-17 coxed quad at the 2011 North Island Championships
• 2012 New Zealand Junior Trialist

Brooke Bode – Dallas, Texas (Parish Episcopal)
• Multiple sport athlete at Parish Episcopal H.S.
• Named the Most Outstanding Female Rower for Highland Park Crew as a junior
• Recipient of the Oarlock Award as a junior
• Also a letter winner in track and cross country

Tayla Daniel – Riverside, Conn. (School of the Holy Child)
• Multiple sport athlete, family relocated to the United States from Australia
• Selected as the MVP during her first fall season with Greenwich Crew
• Competed in track with the Caulfield Athletics club of Australia
• Also competed in varsity aerobics in her native Australia
