AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas head coach Carie Graves has announced the signing of four rowers for the 2011-12 academic year. The Longhorns signed Melanie Eckert (Wilmette, Ill.), Katie Trovato (Sewickley, Pa.), Kim Gorcyca (Kennett, Pa.) and Casey Redman (Scottsdale, Ariz.) to round out Texas' fall signing class.
Eckert rows for New Trier High School in Wilmette where she has enjoyed a decorated prep rowing career. She has attended the U.S. Junior National Team Camp in each of the past three seasons and in December she will attend the U.S. Junior National Team High Performance Camp in Austin. Eckert has rowed in the youth 8+ at the last three Head of the Charles regattas, posting a fifth-place finish in 2010. At the 2010 U.S. Rowing Youth National Championships she helped her 8+ to a third-place finish and stroked her 2- and 8+ to wins at the 2009-10 CanAmMex regatta.
Trovato rows for Three Rivers Rowing Association and attends Quaker Valley High School in Sewickley. The current high school senior attended the 2009-10 U.S. Junior National Team CanAmMex Selection Camp and went on to help her 2- and 8+ boats to first-place finishes at the CanAmEx regatta. In 2008-09 she attended U.S. Rowing's Developmental Camp.
Gorcyca follows her older sister, current Longhorn junior Jacqueline, to Texas after rowing for Newport Rowing Club and attending Kennett High School. In 2010, the senior led her 4+ boat to a seventh-place finish at the U.S. Rowing Youth National Championships. She also paced her youth 4+ crew to a seventh-place finish at the 2009 Head of the Hooch regatta.
Redman rows for Tempe Juniors rowing club and attends Chaparral High School in Scottsdale. In 2010, Redman rowed her 2x to a sixth-place finish at the Head of the Charles and a third-place finish at the Head of the Hooch. The previous year she notched first-place finishes in the 2x and 4x at the U.S. Rowing Club Nationals as well as logging a second-place finish in the 1x. At the 2009 Head of the Charles she earned a fourth-place finish in the 2x and added a win in the 2x at the 2009 Head of the Hooch.
The Longhorns will fill out their 2011-12 recruiting class during the spring signing period.
