Bartz and Chodkiewicz earn Big 12 Conference postgraduate scholarships

IRVING, Texas -- University of Texas rower Danielle Bartz and tennis player Hubert Chodkiewicz were selected as recipients of the Big 12 Conference's Dr. Prentice Gautt Postgraduate Scholarships for the 2007-08 season by the league office.

Bartz and Chodkiewicz completed their collegiate eligibility in their respective sports this spring. Bartz (Woodville, Texas), helped the Texas Rowing team to a stellar season in 2008, knocking off nationally ranked Wisconsin and beating 2007 NCAA qualifier Central Florida. The Longhorns concluded their season with a fifth-place finish in the south region and a 12th-place finish overall at the 2008 Aramark South/Central Region sprints.

The government and Spanish honors major graduated with a 3.7 GPA and was a Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association National Scholar-Athlete and ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 6 honoree. Bartz also received the Rotary National Scholarship in 2007, valued at $27,000 for future study in a Spanish-speaking country. In addition to her double major, Bartz finished her degree with a minor in French and is fluent in three languages.

Chodkiewicz (Corpus Christi, Texas), a three-time Academic All-Big 12 first-team selection, posted an 18-6 singles record and a 17-6 overall doubles mark last season in helping Texas reach the finals of the NCAA Championship match. Chodkiewicz finished his UT career with a 68-38 overall singles record and an 86-31 overall doubles mark.

A economics major who has navigated through a rigorous pre-medicine curriculum, Chodkiewicz will enroll in medical school at The University of Texas in Houston in August.

The scholarships are named in honor of the late Dr. Prentice Gautt, a former Big 12 Conference staff member and student services' pioneer who passed away in March 2005. The list of all-time recipients has grown to 201 since the inception of the league in 1996-97. Starting in 2002-03, additional funding increased scholarship award winners to two per member institution.

To date the Big 12 has provided $1,205,600 for postgraduate education. The individual grants began at $2,500 in 1996-97, were raised to $5,000 in 1999, increased to $6,900 for 2004-05 and climbed to $7,500 in 2006-07.

Criteria for the awards includes a cumulative grade point average of 3.500 on a 4.000 scale, participation in at least two years of intercollegiate athletics at the nominee's respective institution and completion of athletics' eligibility.

The student-athletes also must graduate from their respective member institutions within 15 months of their selection for a postgraduate scholarship and are expected to enroll in graduate/professional schools within two years of graduation.

Three faculty representatives, one senior woman administrator and one director of athletics form the selection panel for the awards.
