May 13, 2010 Texas at the South/Central Aramark Sprints 2010 Conference USA Championship held in conjunction with the South/Central Aramark Sprints click here for details LONGHORN & RACE NOTABLES The Longhorns' will race on the Melton Hill Rowing Course on Melton Hill Lake, which is fed by the Clinch River, as part of the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) waterway system. The 2,000-meter rowing course has seven straight lanes that are fully buoyed. In 2009, Texas posted a 13th-place overall finish and placed sixth in the south region at the South/Central Sprints in Oak Ridge, Tenn. The second varsity eight comprised of coxswain Annie Heiner, Stephanie Matejka, Angela Kirchner, Jelena Zunic, Courtney Nicklas, Jacqueline Gorcyca, Anna Thomson, Laura Perkins and Elizabeth Meserve posted a time of 6:35.1 in the petite final and notched a fifth-place finish. The 2V8 finished behind Notre Dame (6:27.1), Iowa (6:28.4), Minnesota (6:31.6) and Tennessee (6:32.1). Last time out, Texas won the second-annual Big 12 Rowing Championship (May 1) on the Oklahoma River, marking its second straight conference title after capturing the previous seven Big 12 Invitational crowns. Texas won the conference championship, totaling 108 points, while Oklahoma finished second with 97 points, Kansas claimed third with 92 points and Kansas State finished fourth with 86 points. The Longhorns' won all five of its races, winning the first varsity eight, second varsity eight, first varsity four, first novice eight and second novice eight. At the Big 12 Championship, the Horns' first varsity eight crew of coxswain Mary Cait McPherson, stroke Jacqueline Gorcyca, Laurel McCaig, Meg George, Nancy Arrington, Jennifer VanderMaarel, Courtney Nicklas, Sally Tunell and Felicia Izaguirre Werner posted a time of 6:41.12 to edge Oklahoma's boat that finished in 6:41.86. The Horns posted three second-place finishes in the C finals during the third session of the second-annual Lake Natoma Invitational (April 18). Texas finished second in the C group first varsity eight, second varsity eight and first varsity four races. Texas' first varsity eight crew of coxswain Mary Cait McPherson, stroke Jacqueline Gorcyca, Felicia Izaguirre-Werner, Jennifer VanderMaarel, Laurel McCaig, Jelena Zunic, Courtney Nicklas, Meg George and Nancy Arrington completed the race in 6:44.99, trailing Minnesota (6:41.10) and defeating Sacramento State (6:48.02). Texas registered five victories, including the two fastest times of the day in its dual regatta with Kansas (March 27, 2010). The Longhorns posted wins in the first varsity eight, second varsity eight, first varsity four, first novice eight and second novice eight races. The first varsity eight boat comprised of coxswain Mary Cait McPherson, stroke Jacqueline Gorcyca, Laurel McCaig, Meg George, Courtney Nicklas, Sally Tunell, Nancy Arrington, Jennifer VanderMaarel and Felicia Izaguirre-Werner posted the best time of the day, defeating the Jayhawks, 6:46.2-to-7:08.0. Texas posted a total of 21 victories in its four sessions at the 2010 Longhorn Invitational (March 19-21). The first varsity eight boat of coxswain Emma Dirks, stroke Charity McDonald, Courtney Nicklas, Meg George, Laurel McCaig, Jacqueline Gorcyca, Nancy Arrington, Jennifer VanderMaarel and Felicia Izaguirre-Werner posted victories against Oklahoma, UCF and Iowa at the event. The Longhorns 2V8 boat added wins against Oklahoma, Iowa and Louisville.
