Texas at the Big 12 Championship LONGHORN & RACE NOTABLES The Big 12 Championship is decided on the following points scale, awarding a designated number of points for first, second and third place in each race: Texas won the 2008 title, totaling 54 points, while Kansas finished second with 45 points and Kansas State placed third with 39 points. Texas' varsity and novice rowing teams combined for four victories as the Longhorns claimed their seventh straight Big 12 Invitational championship. The Longhorns' first varsity eight finished first in its race, posting a time of 6:40.7, besting Kansas State (6:44.4) and Kansas (6:49.0). At the Lake Natoma Invitational (4/18-19), the Longhorns' second varsity eight posted a second-place finish in its race with No. 16 Wisconsin and No. 19 UCLA in the first session. Texas claimed second place in the group three final team points total at the inaugural event. The Longhorns' varsity boats competed against Central Florida and Sacramento State in their final session, while UT's novice eight took on UCLA in the petite finals. Texas' first varsity eight comprised of coxswain Mary Cait McPherson, stroke Jen VanderMaarel, Felicia Izaguirre-Werne , Meg George, Karli Sheahan, Jelena Zunic, Nancy Arrington, Colleen Irby and Sara Cottingham finished second in its final, posting a time of 6:42.37, finishing behind Sacramento State (6:41.80) and ahead of UCF (6:45.77).
On April 4, Texas posted four victories over Kansas, earning wins in the first varsity eight, second varsity eight, varsity four and first novice eight races. Texas' first varsity eight comprised of coxswain Mary Cait McPherson, stroke Jen VanderMaarel, Felicia Izaguirre-Werner, Meg George, Karli Sheahan, Jelena Zunic, Nancy Arrington, Colleen Irby and Sara Cottingham posted a time of 7:06.5, besting KU which finished in 7:13.8. At the Longhorn Invitational (3/20-22), Texas' first varsity eight posted a pair of victories over Duke and Central Florida. The Horns' crew comprised of coxswain Mary Cait McPherson, stroke Jen VanderMaarel, Felicia Izaguirre-Werner, Meg George, Nancy Arrington, Jelena Zunic, Karli Sheahan, Colleen Irby and Sara Cottingham bested Duke 6:44.7-to-6:49.9 and defeated UCF 7:08.6-to-7:24.35. Texas earned five first-place finishes on March 7 at the 2009 Heart of Texas regatta on Lady Bird Lake. The Longhorns claimed victories in the open-8, novice-8, open-2, open-4 and novice-4. The Longhorns varsity eight crew of coxswain Mary Cait McPherson, Jacqueline Gorcyca, Nancy Arrington, Meg George, Anna Thomson, Jelena Zunic, Allison Weiland, Colleen Irby and Felicia Izaguirre-Werner posted a time of 3:19.15 in its victory. Texas' other varsity eight placed second, crossing the finish in 3:19.49.
