Rowing sweeps Cincinnati and Kansas

AUSTIN, Texas -- The University of Texas swept all five races of novice and varsity eights as well as the open and varsity fours against northern visitors Cincinnati and Kansas Saturday afternoon on Town Lake in Austin.

The Longhorns opened the morning with the first of three novice races against the Jayhawks and Bearcats, starting with the third and fourth novice eights division. Texas' No. 3 boat took first-place with a time of 7:26.8 and the UT No. 4 novice boat took second with a time of 7:38.9.

In the second novice eights race, Texas defeated Kansas head-to-head with a time of 7:15.3 to the Jayhawks time of 7:43.1.

Texas continued to dominate in the first novice eights race. The Longhorns finished first with a time of 7:05.0, followed by Kansas with a time of 7:22.0 and Cincinnati with a time of 7:40.5 in third.

The Longhorns would then take the top spots in both the open fours and the first varsity fours races. In the open four, Texas finished in a time of 8:01.1 to defeat Cincinnati, who clocked a time of 8:33.1. The UT first varsity four boat took first-place with a time of 8:06.2 passing both Kansas (8:26.1) and Cincinnati (8:28.7) for top honors.

In the second varsity eights race, Texas crossed the markers first with a time of 7:20.0, the Jayhawks finished with a time of 7:36.9 in second and Cincinnati took third with a time of 7:38.2.

In its last home event of the season, Texas won the last race of the meet, the first varsity eights, with a time of 7:06.9. Kansas finished with a time of 7:16.6 to take second place, while Cincinnati took third-place with a mark of 7:43.5.

"It was a good day on the water for us," said head rowing coach Carie Graves. "We had some good results and we are happy with the output after a tough meet last weekend. Both Kansas and Cincinnati are good programs and each race was a tough test. This was great competition for us leading into the Crew Classic."

The Horns head to the west coast next weekend, rowing in the San Diego Crew Classic on Mission Bay in San Diego, Calif., April 1-2.
