No. 15 Rowing sweeps first day of Longhorn Invitational
AUSTIN, Texas -- Among an international field of eight schools and one club, No. 15 Texas Rowing opened their fifth annual Longhorn Invitational on Friday, Mar. 18 on Austin's Town Lake with an afternoon sweep of their six races. Opposite No. 17 Duke in the day's first four events, Longhorns' First and Second Varsity Eight boats turned in winning times of 7:13.8 and 7:14.1, respectively; while the Novice Boats outperformed their Blue Devil counterparts by a combined margin of nearly two minutes. Texas' tightest match of the afternoon came against Duke's First Varsity Eight crew, who earlier in the year, edged the Horns at the prestigious Head of the Charles. In a dead heat going into the last 500 meters, UT pulled away just before the MoPac bridge and finished ahead of the Blue Devils by less than eight seconds. The First Novice and Varsity Four boats faced Iowa in Texas' final two races of the afternoon and kept Texas perfect on the day with times of 8:03.8 and 8:49.8, respectively. "It was a good solid day of racing," said Texas Head Coach Carie Graves. "I was really happy we could open the season this way. I'm looking forward to more outstanding races tomorrow from the fine crews that have come to Austin for our Invitational." The fastest race of the day came just before dusk, as the First Varsity Eight crews of Iowa and Victoria paced each other for the only sub-seven minute marks of the day. The Invitational continues tomorrow, Saturday, Mar. 19, on Town Lake in Austin, with the morning session beginning at 8:00 a.m. and the afternoon session restarting at 4:00 p.m. The Longhorn Invitational TEXAS vs. Duke Iowa vs. Victoria TEXAS vs. Iowa Iowa vs. Texas Crew (First Varsity Eights) TEXAS vs. Iowa Kansas State vs. Texas Crew (First Novice Eight) Tulsa vs. Texas Crew Kansas State vs. Tulsa Iowa vs. Victoria Kansas State vs. Tulsa
