Rowing opens the Longhorn Invitational with nine victories
March 16, 2012 AUSTIN, Texas - The Texas Rowing team opened the three-day Longhorn Invitational by winning each of its nine races. The Longhorns first varsity eight of coxswain Megan Kelly, stroke Hannah Moon, Laurel McCaig, Olivia Nail, Jessica Glennie, Jackie Gorcyca, Casey Redman, Sydney Boyes and Felicia Izaguirre-Werner won its race against Kansas State 7:20.7 to 7:40.9. The second varsity eight boat of coxswain Rachel Donnelly, Brenna Coldren, Chelsea Burns, Devon Clark, Kim Gorcyca, Melanie Eckert, Courtney Nicklas, Katarina Susac and Karli Sheahan also earned a win over Kansas State, 7:36.4 to 8:08.1. The first varsity four of coxswain Kassandra Budzik, Taylor Parker, Emily Jones, Katie Trovato and Shari Singh bested Kansas State, 8:34.2 to 8:42.7. The second varsity four of coxswain Kat Tong, Lyndsey DuBose, Tea Vrtlar, Jillian Byron, and Sarah Pedersen downed UCF, 8:45.8 to 8:52.9. The first novice four of coxswain Kenna Harris, Heather Leighton, Katie Ogg, Jazmin Smith and Lauren Moberg downed Kansas State, 8:47.5 to 9:11.6. The first novice eight of coxswain Stephanie Bickford, Taylar Williams, Sky Gilmour, Sara Walton, Lauren Barlow, Alex Buck, Amy Gross, Kara Turner and Christine Young won their race against Kansas State, 7:49.6 to 8:02.1. The first novice eight of coxswain Kenna Harris, Heather Leighton, Katie Ogg, Jazmin Smith, Sarita Scott, Nicole Kruijs, Lauren Moberg, Brenda Morlan-Villafuerte and Lucia Mueller downed UCF, 8:28.7 to an adjusted time of 8:53.7. The third novice crew of coxswain coxswain Erin Dooley, Jessica Williams, Angela Bumstead, Whitney Glick, Hannah Ritchie, Jenna Shorter, Sarah Ott, Alline Kane and Caroline Beltran propelled into a victory over Oklahoma, 7:52.2 to 7:57.8. The fourth novice crew, comprised of coxswain Caitlin Mantooth, Sam Jackson, Julia Colman, Lauren Deschner, Kim Magnus, Angela Harris, Edimma Essien, Erissa Hinshaw and Madeline Stahlheber, earned a close victory over Oklahoma, 8:09.0 to 8:11.3. The Longhorn Invitational covers 2,000 meters and is held annually on Lady Bird Lake. Texas and the five other crews compete in head-to-head races in each race of the weekend.
Texas returns to Lady Bird Lake on Saturday, March 17, when it hosts the second and third sessions of the Longhorn Invitational. The second session will begin at 8 a.m. Central, while the third session begins at 4 p.m. Central.
