Novice rowers shine at Fighting Nutria
AUSTIN, Texas -- The Texas Rowing team commenced its spring season, Saturday at the Fighting Nutria on Town Lake, with the first varsity eight boat finishing second among women's crews and the first novice eight boat finishing in third place. Coxswain Mary Cait McPherson led the first varsity eight boat of Luise Fleischhauer, Emily Tingey, Kelli Garrett, Lucy Mulvey, Nancy Arrington, Lianna Burton, Alex Janss and Carly Gloge to a second place women's finish with a time of 0:29:48. The first novice eight boat of coxswain Desi Council, Stephanie Matejka, Katie Perlberg, Sara Cottingham, Cara Parker, Kellie Lunday, Madison Griffin, Simone Hesson and Kelly Sloan crossed the finish line in third place, finishing in 0:30:45. The Austin Rowing Club (ARC) comp women's A squad was the first women's crew to cross the finish line, finishing in 0:29:36. "The ARC has a great women's eight that is made up of a lot of former UT rowers," noted head coach Carie Graves. "Our team needs to work hard in the coming weeks on toughness, as we prepare for the Longhorn Invitational and the rest of the spring season." UT's second varsity eight finished fourth (0:30:59), the third varsity eight placed fifth (0:31:07), the second novice boat crossed the finish in eighth place with a time of 0:32:36 and the third novice boat finished ninth (0:33:26). The Texas novice team returns to the water, Saturday, March 10 for the Heart of Texas regatta and the varsity team resumes action Friday, March 16 at the three-day Longhorn Invitational.
