Rowing preview: Fighting Nutria

WHAT: UT kicks off its 2013 spring season with the annual Fighting Nutria, a race that pits the UT women’s varsity and novice rowing squads against members of Texas Crew, the University’s men’s club team. The race is part of the Winter Warrior event hosted by Austin Rowing Club.

The 8,000-meter race begins just east of Redbud Island at the far west end of Lady Bird Lake and concludes at Bird Island on the east end.

WHEN: Saturday, Feb. 9 – 8 a.m. Central

LAST YEAR AT THE FIGHTING NUTRIA: The Longhorns earned six of the top-nine places at the 2012 Fighting Nutria on Lady Bird Lake.

MORE ON THE LONGHORNS: Texas concluded the 2011-12 season by taking second at the Conference USA Championship in Oak Ridge, Tenn. Then-seniors Felicia Izaguirre-Werner, Karli Sheahan and Jackie Gorcyca earned All-Conference USA selections.

Laurel McCaig was selected as the Big 12 Co-Rower of the Year and head coach Carie Graves was named as the Big 12 Co-Coach of the Year after the Longhorns won their fourth straight Big 12 title last season.
