Rowing wins open pair on day two of Head of the Hooch

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- The Texas Rowing team finished their weekend at the Head of the Hooch with three top five finishes in the open pair, including a victory by Jennifer VanderMaarel and Felicia Izaguirre-Werner. VanderMaarel and Izaguirre-Werner won the open pair race with a time of 18:14.9. The tandem of Anna Thomson and Jacqueline Gorcyca placed third, clocking a time of 18:41.1. Karli Sheahan and Katarina Susac rounded out the top five with a fifth place finish and a time of 19:07.7. Texas' pair of Courtney Nicklas and Sally Tunell placed sixth and clocked a time of 17:21.2, while the duo of Shelly Beck and Tea Vrtlar finished seventh and crossed the finish in 17:33.9. The final pair of Natasia Giles and Julia Stevens placed eighth and registered a time of 18:12.3. The first open eight crew of coxswain Emma Dirks, Charity McDonald, Lauren Lehman, Taylor Parker, Chelsea Burns, Lauren Studey, Zoe Fitzgerald, Sally Tunell and Margo Harlow notched a time of 16:36.1 in their fifth-place finish.
Celebrating its 30th anniversary, the Head of the Hooch is a 5,000-meter (3.1-mile) head race on the Tennessee River ending at Ross's Landing Park in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Texas will have a two month break until it returns to the water in February for the Fighting Nutria. |
