Rowing notches four top-five finishes at Head of Hooch

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The University of Texas Rowing team posted four top-five finishes on its first day at the Head of the Hooch regatta. The Longhorns placed third in the championship 4+ and fourth in the championship 8+.

The Horns’ crew of coxswain Mary Cait McPherson, stroke Jennifer VanderMaarel, Felicia Izaguirre-Werner, Meg George, Anna Thomson, Jelena Zunic, Karli Sheahan, Sally Tunell and Nancy Arrington finished fourth with a time of 14:31.2. Clemson won the race in 14:16.9, Tennessee took second (14:17.4) and Louisville took third (14:18.2).

Texas’ top four-boat of coxswain Emma Dirks, VanderMaarel, Izaguirre-Werner, George and Sheahan placed third in its race, crossing the finish in 15:52.1, trailing Clemson (15:36.5) and Louisville (15:39.5).

The Longhorns second varsity eight of Dirks, stroke Stephanie Matejka, Callie Mattrisch, Jacqueline Gorcyca, Laurel McCaig, Katarina Susac, Courtney Nicklas, Colleen Irby and Julia Stevens placed sixth and posted a time of 14:40.8. The third varsity eight finished the race in 15:15.1 and placed 16th.


 

 

UT’s second varsity four crew of coxswain Megan Kelly, Susac, McCaig, Lovric and Zunic finished 12th, clocking a time of 16:29.7. The third four of coxswain Colby Lowrey, Matejka, Thomson, Tunell and Arrington completed the race in 16:38.1 and placed 16th.

Texas’ first novice boat clocked a time of 15:47.7 and finished fifth in the freshman/novice 8+. The second novice eight finished in 15:53.5 and placed sixth, while the third boat finished seventh (16:26.5).

In the novice four race, UT placed fifth with a time of 17:59.0 and the second novice boat placed seventh, completing the race in 18:14.7.

The Head of the Hooch is a 5,000-meter (3.1-mile) head race on the Tennessee River ending at Ross's Landing Park in Chattanooga, Tennessee. All boats are started sequentially and race against the clock.

Texas returns to the water on Sunday, Nov. 8 for pairs racing on the second day of the Head of the Hooch.
