Rowing posts three wins on day two at the Head of the Hooch

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The University of Texas Rowing team notched three wins on day two of the 2011 Head of the Hooch, posting victories in the open 2-, open 8+ and championship 1x. Sophomore Sydney Boyes was Texas' lone entry in the women's championship 1x and she finished first among 10 entries, clocking a time of 19:32.0. The Horns entered seven pairs in the women's open 2- and the tandem of Felicia Izaguirre-Werner and Jacqueline Gorcyca claimed the victory, crossing the finish in 19:19.0. UT's pair of Brenna Coldren and Chelsea Burns placed fourth with a time of 19:52.3, while the duo of Melanie Eckert and Laurel McCaig finished eighth and posted a time of 20:12.0. Texas' pair of Jillian Byron and Emily Jones finished 11th in the open 2- (20:26.1), Lyndsey DuBose and Sarah Pedersen placed 12th (20:28.7), Casey Redman and Kim Gorcyca finished 16th (20:50.1) and Abbey Wilkowski and Katie Orem finished 21st (21:15.8).
The Longhorns' varsity entry in the women's open 8+ was also victorious as the crew of coxswain Megan Kelly, stroke Taylor Parker, Jessica Glennie, Olivia Nail, Anna Thomson, Lauren Studey, Tea Vrtlar, Devon Clark and Courtney Nicklas clocked a time of 16:44.4. UT's had three novice entries in the open 8+ as well, with the Horns finishing 15th (18:15.8), 22nd (18:52.0) and 23rd (18:52.5). Texas returns to action in the Spring when it kicks off its 2012 racing season at the Fighting Nutria on Saturday, Feb. 11. |
