Rowing notches five top-five finishes on day one at Head of the Hooch

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The University of Texas Rowing team kicked off day one at the 2011 Head of the Hooch with a second-place finish in the championship eights race.

Texas' first varsity eight comprised of coxswain Megan Kelly, stroke Melanie Eckert, Laurel McCaig, Jacqueline Gorcyca, Jessica Glennie, Devon Clark, Anna Thomson, Sydney Boyes and Felicia Izaguirre-Werner finished second with a time of 16:04.4, just two tenths of a second behind Tennessee's first place boat (16:04.2).

The second varsity eight boat of coxswain Emily Lantz, stroke Taylor Parker, Casey Redman, Olivia Nail, Kim Gorcyca, Hannah Moon, Karli Sheahan, Katie Trovato and Courtney Nicklas placed fourth in the championship eight with a time of 16:27.9.

 

 

The Longhorns also competed in the championship fours and Texas' first varsity crew of coxswain Kelly, J.Gorcyca, McCaig, Eckert and Izaguirre-Werner placed fourth with a time of 17:59.9. Tennessee claimed first in the event, crossing the finish in 17:50.5. Louisville finished second (17:51.1) and Tulsa placed third (17:56.7).

Texas' second varsity four boat of coxswain Rachel Donnelly, Brenna Coldren, Chelsea Burns, Lyndsey DuBose and Redman placed sixth with a time of 18:13.3.

In the novice eights race, Texas first novice eight boat placed fourth with a time of 18:03.3 and the second novice eight placed seventh (18:19.7). The Horns' novice four boat came in second in its race with a time of 20:03.5, only trailing Oklahoma City University (19:44.9).

The Head of the Hooch Regatta is a 5,000-meter race on the Tennessee River and is the second largest regatta in the United States. The Longhorns will return to action tomorrow for the final races.

Texas returns to action on Sunday, Nov. 6 when it competes in the open eight and championship pair races.
