Rowing adds five top-10 finishes on final day of Head of the Hooch

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Texas picked up one top-five finish and four additional top-10 finishes Sunday on the final day of the Head of the Hooch on the Tennessee River. The Longhorns finished the two-day regatta with five top-five showings and another eight top-10 finishes.

Junior Sydney Boyes scored a fifth-place finish in the 20-entry championship 1x event by finishing in 20:46.2. Texas had six entries in the open 2- event and came away with three top-10 showings. Lyndsey DuBose and Jessica Smith teamed up to take sixth in 20:33.7, while Johanna Neuber and Victoria Bujala took eighth in 20:43.5.

Katarina Susac and Laurel McCaig produced a 10th place finish in 20:49.4. Melanie Eckert and Jessica Glennie took 23rd place in 21:37.8, while Brenna Coldren and Chelsea Burns took 25th in 21:39.0. Sara Walton and Schyler Gilmour rounded out the Longhorns’ entries in the open 2- and took 32nd place in 22:08.1.

Texas featured two varsity entries and three novice entries in the open 8+ division. UT’s first varsity eight boat featuring coxswain Kassie Budzik, stroke Olivia Nail, Casey Redman, Devon Clark, Lauren Moberg, Kara Turner, Angela Bumstead, Kim Gorcyca and Tea Vrtlar placed ninth in the 43-crew event in 17:26.2. The Longhorns’ second varsity eight boat comprised of coxswain Kelly Hargraves, stroke Abbey Wilkowski, Emily Jones, Lauren Studey, Kimmie Winder, Taylor Dorsey, Katy Hemmert, Audrey Springer-Wilson and Paige Jones placed 16th in the 5,000-meter race in 17:44.5.

Texas’ first novice eight boat with coxswain Christine Young, stroke Lucy Ellis, Rachel Smith, Casey Timmerman, April Brown, Danette Higginbotham, Hollis Scheffler, Kate Walker and Taylor Martin took 29th place in 18:51.7. The Longhorns’ second novice eight entry featuring coxswain Lauren Deschner, stroke Rachel Trent, Taylor Wilson, Abby Emery, Vanessa Vandenworm, Laken Carleton, Kaitlyn Stinson, Victoria Centeno and Carmen Hargis-Villanueva placed 30th in 18:54.3.

Texas’ third novice eight crew featuring coxswain Megan Burford, stroke Meghan White, Ashlynd Epstein, Katarina Longoria, Kat McElhinney, Cortney Roberts, Demetria Lister, Rose Sulentic and Katy Kazen took 33rd place in 19:35.1.
