Rowing opens Head of the Hooch with four top-five finishes

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Competing against deep and competitive fields in each division, Texas posted four top-five finishes in the opening session Saturday at the two-day Head of the Hooch on the Tennessee River.

Texas logged impressive showings in the championship fours division, where they placed two boats among the top-five finishers in the 36-crew event. UT's second varsity four boat featuring coxswain Rachel Donnelly, stroke Katarina Susac, Laurel McCaig, Johanna Neuber and Casey Redman placed third in 18:18.2. Texas' first varsity four boat with coxswain Kenna Harris, stroke Sydney Boyes, Chelsea Burns, Melanie Eckert and Victoria Bujala placed fifth in 18:26.3.

Texas sent two crews to compete in the 30-crew championship eights division and produced a pair of top-10 finishes. UT's first varsity eight featuring coxswain Kassie Budzik, stroke Sydney Boyes, Chelsea Burns, Melanie Eckert, Laurel McCaig, Katarina Susac, Victoria Bujala, Kim Gorcyca and Casey Redman placed fourth in the 5000-meter race in 16:35.4. Texas' second varsity eight boat with coxswain Rachel Donnelly, stroke Brenna Coldren, Jessica Smith, Devon Clark, Jessie Glennie, Olivia Nail, Lauren Moberg, Johanna Neuber, Tea Vrtlar took seventh in 16:41.1.

 

 

The Longhorns placed two crews among the top-six in the novice eights, which featured 50 crews. UT's first novice eight boat with coxswain Christine Young, stroke Lucy Ellis, Paige Jones, Audrey Springer-Wilson, Rachel Smith, Dannette Higginbotham, Katy Hemmert, Casey Timmerman and April Brown placed third in 17:56.9. The second novice eight boat featuring coxswain Lauren Deschner, stroke Rachel Trent, Taylor Wilson, Kate Walker, Hollis Scheffler, Abby Emery, Kaitlyn Stinson, Laken Carleton and Taylor Martin took sixth in 18:40.9. 6th, 18:40.9

The Longhorns placed two crews among the top-10 in the novice fours, which featured 34 crews. UT's first novice four boat with coxswain Kelly Hargraves, stroke Meghan White, Ashlynd Epstein, Victoria Centeno and Vanessa Vandenworm took sixth in 20:23.6. The second novice four crew of coxswain Corey Timmerman, stroke Carmen Hargis-Villanueva, Caitlyn Valadez, Katy Kazen and Rose Sulentic placed eighth in 20:35.1.

Texas will compete in the championship 1x, open 2- and open 8+ divisions in Sunday's final day of competition in Chattanooga.
