AUSTIN, Texas - The University of Texas Rowing team posted three victories on Saturday afternoon at the 25th annual Head of the Colorado regatta on Lady Bird Lake. The Longhorns claimed wins in the open eight, first novice eight and second novice eight races.

The crew of coxswain Mary Cait McPherson, stroke Jennifer VanderMaarel, Felicia Izaguirre-Werner, Meg George, Anna Thomson, Jelena Zunic, Karli Sheahan, Colleen Irby and Nancy Arrington won the open eight, posting a time of 15:39.2.

Texas' second varsity eight boat comprised of coxswain Emma Dirks, stroke Katarina Susac, Laurel McCaig, Stephanie Matejka, Tajana Lovric, Jacqueline Gorcyca, Courtney Nicklas, Sally Tunell and Julia Stevens clocked a time of 15:58.7 and finished second in the open eight. The third varsity eight placed ninth, but its time was unavailable.

"The varsity has been training hard as they move toward the last race of the season," head coach Carie Graves said. "We have some good depth this year, but would like to see better rowing when the team is tired. Each boat is working on rowing well when tired, so when the wall pushes they have to push back constructively with speed not just power."

The Horns' first novice eight boat won their race with a time of 17:26.6, while the second novice boat finished third (17:53.7) and the third boat placed fourth (18:00.0).

In the second novice race, Texas took the top three spots, finishing in 18:31.8, 18:47.6 and 20:03.0.

The Texas novice four boats claimed first, second and fourth places in the fours race, clocking times of 19:14.3, 20:27.0 and 22:24.7.

"The novices did a great job today in their first ever race down Lady Bird Lake," Graves said. They show tremendous promise and their squad has a great deal of depth.  Coach (Caroline) King has done an excellent job with them thus far in their short rowing career."

The Head of the Colorado is a 5,000 meter head-race held annually on the last Saturday of October, and is currently in its 25th year.

Texas returns to the water on Saturday, Nov. 7 when it travels to Chattanooga, Tenn. at the Head of the Hooch.
