Rowing notches three wins at Head of the Colorado
Oct. 27, 2012 AUSTIN, Texas – Texas won three of the five divisions in which it competed Saturday at the 2012 Head of the Colorado on Lady Bird Lake. The Head of the Colorado is typically a 5,000-meter event held annually on the last Saturday of October, though the course was shortened to 4,000 meters this year. Texas also cruised to victory in the women’s open fours division, which featured seven crews. UT’s lone entry that featured coxswain Kelly Cunnane, stroke Heather Leighton, Edima Essien, Taylor Dorsey and Caroline Beltran took the win in 17:14.5. Texas took second and third places in the 11-team women’s novice eights. UT’s first novice eight boat featuring Christine Young, stroke Lucy Ellis, Paige Jones, Audrey Springer-Wilson, Rachel Smith, Dannette Higginbotham, Katy Hemmert, Casey Timmerman and April Brown placed second in 15:54.1. Texas’ second novice eight crew with coxswain Lauren Deschner, stroke Rachel Trent, Taylor Wilson, Kate Walker, Hollis Scheffler, Abby Emery, Kaitlyn Stinson, Laken Carleton and Taylor Martin took third in 16:40.0. Texas added fourth and fifth-place finishes in the novice fours.
