Rowing notches three wins at Head of the Colorado

AUSTIN, Texas – Texas won three of the five divisions in which it competed Saturday at the 2012 Head of the Colorado on Lady Bird Lake. The Head of the Colorado is typically a 5,000-meter event held annually on the last Saturday of October, though the course was shortened to 4,000 meters this year.

Texas claimed the top three spots in the nine-team women’s open eights division. UT’s first varsity eight boat featuring coxswain Kassie Budzik, stroke Sydney Boyes, Chelsea Burns, Melanie Eckert, Laurel McCaig, Katarina Susac, Victoria Bujala, Johanna Neuber, Casey Redman took first in 13:52.1.

The second varsity eight boat consisting of coxswain Rachel Donnelly, stroke Brenna Coldren, Jessica Smith, Olivia Nail, Sky Gilmour, Kim Gorcyca, Lauren Moberg, Devon Clark and Tea Vrtlar took second in 14:08.5. UT’s third varsity eight boat with coxswain Kenna Harris, stroke Lyndsey DuBose, Angela Bumstead, Lauren Studey, Emily Jones, Kara Turner, Sara Walton, Abbey Wilkowski and Kimmie Winder took third in 14:43.2.

In the women’s second novice eights division, UT went against a pair of boats from the University of Oklahoma and emerged with the victory. Coxswain Katie Betsill, stroke Courtney Long, Lisa Sage, Hannah Sieben, Annie Murchison, Caroline Ullrich, Ruthie Kerr, Elizabeth Coyne and Sela Flowers took the win in 17:19.8.

Texas also cruised to victory in the women’s open fours division, which featured seven crews. UT’s lone entry that featured coxswain Kelly Cunnane, stroke Heather LeightonEdima EssienTaylor Dorsey and Caroline Beltran took the win in 17:14.5.

Texas took second and third places in the 11-team women’s novice eights. UT’s first novice eight boat featuring Christine Young, stroke Lucy Ellis, Paige Jones, Audrey Springer-Wilson, Rachel Smith, Dannette Higginbotham, Katy Hemmert, Casey Timmerman and April Brown placed second in 15:54.1. Texas’ second novice eight crew with coxswain Lauren Deschner, stroke Rachel Trent, Taylor Wilson, Kate Walker, Hollis Scheffler, Abby Emery, Kaitlyn Stinson, Laken Carleton and Taylor Martin took third in 16:40.0. Texas added fourth and fifth-place finishes in the novice fours.

Texas resumes fall competition on Nov. 3 when it competes at the two-day Head of the Hooch in Chattanooga, Tenn.
