Rowing kicks off season with three top-five finishes at Head of Oklahoma
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. -- The Texas Rowing team kicked off its 2010 fall racing season on Saturday at the Head of the Oklahoma with three top-five finishes, including a win in the collegiate four.
The Longhorns' first varsity four crew of coxswain Emma Dirks, Jennifer VanderMaarel, Felicia Izaguirre-Werner, Olivia Nail and Karli Sheahan won the women's collegiate 4+, posting a time of 15:15.137.
Texas' second varsity four of coxswain Meg Kelly, Charity McDonald, Laurel McCaig, Jacqueline Gorcyca and Anna Thomson claimed third in the fours race, crossing the finish in 15:32.542. The Horns' third fours boat comprised of coxswain Emily Lantz, Shelly Beck, Tajana Lovric, Jelena Zunic and Tea Vrtlar placed eighth with a time of 14:37.281. Texas' fourth varsity four crew of coxswain Katie Sayre, Hannah Moon, Jessica Glennie, Devon Clark and Courtney Nicklas clocked a time of 16:16.835 and placed 12th out of 32 boats.
The Longhorns' first varsity eight boat of coxswain Dirks, stroke McDonald, McCaig, Zunic, Glennie, Gorcyca, Thomson, VanderMaarel and Izaguirre-Werner finished third and registered a time of 14:12.219.
The Horns’ third varsity boat of coxswain Lantz, stroke Lauren Lehman, Clark, Margaret Harlow, Vrtlar, Sally Tunell, Jillian Domingue, Natasia Giles and Julia Stevens posted a time of 14:37.281 and placed eighth. UT’s second varsity eight crew comprised of coxswain Kelly, stroke Beck, Chelsea Simpson, Lyndsey DuBose, Lovric, Moon, Sheahan, Nail and Nicklas placed ninth and crossed the finish in 14:47.292.
The Head of the Oklahoma features a challenging 2.5 mile head race course. Beginning near the west edge of the basin, the head race course traverses through several bridges and turns before straightening midway through the course at Regatta Park for a straight 2,000 meter path to the finish line.
Texas returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 30 when it competes at the Head of the Colorado on Lady Bird Lake.
