Rowing places fifth in collegiate eight at the Head of the Oklahoma

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. -- The University of Texas rowing team earned a fifth-place finish in the women’s collegiate eight and a sixth-place finish in the open four in its first day of the 2008-09 rowing season. The Longhorns also garnered a seventh-place finish in the women’s collegiate eight at the Head of the Oklahoma. Texas’ first varsity boat of coxswain Mary Cait McPherson, stroke Jennifer VanderMaarel, Nancy Arrington, Jelena Zunic, Callie Mattrisch, Meg George, Anna Thomson, Jacqueline Gorcyca and “We had some good racing today to start our non-traditional season,” head coach Carie Graves said. “This time of the year is about trying to see who trained over the summer and who has improved the most.” The Longhorns’ open four crew of coxswain Megan Kelly, VanderMaarel, Arrington,
“I am very pleased with the attitude of the team,” Graves exclaimed. “It feels like we are a very mature group this year.” Oklahoma City University's Head of the Oklahoma features a challenging 2.5 mile head race course. Beginning near the west edge of the basin, the head race course traverses through several bridges and turns before straightening midway through the course at Regatta Park for a straight 2,000 meter path to the finish line. Texas returns to action Sunday, Oct. 5 in the open two, collegiate 1x and collegiate four races at the Head of the Oklahoma.
