Rowing notches pair of victories at Boot of the Oklahoma

OKLAHOMA CITY -- The University of Texas rowing team kicked off its 2009-10 racing season on Saturday afternoon with a pair of victories at the 2009 Boot of the Oklahoma on the Oklahoma River. The Longhorns claimed the top two spots in the collegiate eight, while notching a first-place finish in the collegiate four. The first varsity eight crew of coxswain Mary Cait McPherson, stroke Jennifer VanderMaarel, Felicia Izaguirre-Werner, Meg George, Callie Mattrisch, Jelena Zunic, Karli Sheahan, Sally Tunell and Nancy Arrington won the collegiate eight, crossing the finish in 14:04.034. The second varsity boat comprised of coxswain Colby Lowrey, stroke Colleen Irby, Anna Thomson, Stephanie Matejka, Courtney Nicklas, Jacqueline Gorcyca, Liz Keenan, Julia Stevens and Charity McDonald placed second in the collegiate eight with a time of 14:29.998. The Horns third varsity eight picked up a seventh-place finish in the race, clocking a time of 15:01.256.
"I'm pretty happy with our first and second varsity boats and the depth that we showed in the fours race today," head coach Caries Graves said. "Our third boat was pretty fast as well and for this early in the season I am happy to have had the results that we had." In the collegiate fours race, Texas' top boat of coxswain Emma Dirks, VanderMaarel, Izaguirre-Werner, George and Sheahan won the race, finishing in 15:58.008. The Horns' second varsity four of McPherson, Irby, Mattrisch, Gorcyca and Arrington earned a third-place finish, completing the race in 16:46.456. The third varsity four comprised of Lowrey, Matejka, Thomson, Susac and Lovric finished sixth and clocked a time of 16:53.566. Texas returns to the water on Saturday, Oct. 31 when it competes in the Head of the Colorado on Lady Bird Lake. |
