Rowing concludes final session at South/Central Regional

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. - The Texas Rowing team posted a 13th-place overall finish and placed sixth in the south region at the 2009 South/Central Regional in Oak Ridge, Tenn. The Horns conclude their 2009 racing season with a solid finish by the 2V8 in a tightly-contested petite final, while the varsity eight finished second in its final. The second varsity eight comprised of coxswain Annie Heiner, Stephanie Matejka, Angela Kirchner, Jelena Zunic, Courtney Nicklas, Jacqueline Gorcyca, Anna Thomson, Laura Perkins and Elizabeth Meserve posted a time of 6:35.1 in the petite final and notched a fifth-place finish. The 2V8 finished behind Notre Dame (6:27.1), Iowa (6:28.4), Minnesota (6:31.6) and Tennessee (6:32.1). "Overall we need to continue to improve," head coach Carie Graves said. "We had some great races in the final races of the regatta and hopefully we can use those as a jumping off point as we head towards next year." Texas' first varsity eight of coxswain Mary Cait McPherson, stroke Jen VanderMaarel, Felicia Izaguirre-Werner, Meg George, Karli Sheahan, Sara Cottingham, Callie Mattrisch, Colleen Irby and Nancy Arrington finished second in the C final, registering a time of 6:26.54, only trailing Tennessee (6:18.7).
The open four boat of coxswain Emma Dirks, Audrey Ullman, Julia Stevens, Natasia Giles and Liz Keenan placed first in the D final, posting a time of 7:23.9 to knock off Tennessee (7:43.2) and Miami (8:46.1). The Longhorns' varsity four boat of coxswain Colby Lowrey, Sally Tunell, Katrina Cerk, Tajana Lovric and Emily Cook placed third in the C final, clocking a time of 7:23.0 and finishing behind Tennessee (7:15.0) and Kansas (7:18.1). Texas loses just four seniors from its varsity team as it enters the 2009-10 racing season. |
