Rowing completes first session at South/Central Regional

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. - The Texas Rowing team wrapped up its opening session of the Aramark South/Central Regional with a third-place finish in the second varsity eight race and a fourth-place finish in the first varsity race. Texas's second varsity boat was the lone shell to advance to the A/B semifinals. The second varsity eight comprised of coxswain Annie Heiner, Stephanie Matejka, Angela Kirchner, Jelena Zunic, Courtney Nicklas, Jacqueline Gorcyca, Anna Thomson, Laura Perkins and Elizabeth Meserve posted a time of 6:41.36 and finished third in its heat to advance to the A/B semifinals. Michigan won the heat with a time of 6:34.5, while Clemson finished second, completing the race in 6:38.48.
Texas' first varsity eight of coxswain Mary Cait McPherson, stroke Jen VanderMaarel, Felicia Izaguirre-Werner , Meg George, Karli Sheahan, Sara Cottingham, Callie Mattrisch, Colleen Irby and Nancy Arrington finished its race in 6:45.58, placing fourth and finishing behind Michigan (6:29.7), Louisville (6:36.9) and Notre Dame (6:39.59). The 1V8 advances to the C/D semifinals.
The Longhorns' varsity four boat of coxswain Colby Lowrey, Sally Tunell, Katrina Cerk, Tajana Lovric and Emily Cook placed fourth in its preliminary heat, finishing in 7:40.26. Virginia won the heat, finishing in 7:13.0, while Minnesota crossed the finish in 7:16.21 and Louisville clocked a time of 7:28.17. The open four boat of coxswain Emma Dirks, Audrey Ullman, Julia Stevens, Natasia Giles and Liz Keenan crossed the finish in 7:32.47, placing fifth in its prelim heat, finishing behind Ohio State (7:09.3), Michigan (7:12.04), Notre Dame (7:15.99) and Kansas (7:24.8). The open four boat advances to the C/D semifinal. Texas competes in the semifinals Saturday evening to earn a spot in Sunday's finals. |
