Rowing finishes first day of San Diego Crew Classic

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of Texas Rowing team notched two third-place finishes by the second varsity eight and second novice eight to conclude the first day of the San Diego Crew Classic. The first varsity eight of coxswain Megan Kelly, stroke Jackie Gorcyca, Laurel McCaig, Hannah Moon, Casey Redman, Olivia Nail, Chelsea Burns, Devon Clark and Felicia Izaguirre-Werner placed fifth with a time of 6:57.55. No. 6 USC's eight won the race, crossing the line at 6:37.28. The second varsity eight compromised of coxswain Rachel Donnelly, stroke Melanie Eckert, Kim Gorcyca, Katarina Susac, Jessica Glennie, Katie Trovato, Courtney Nicklas, Taylor Parker and Karli Sheahan registered a time of 7:01.22 for a third place finish behind Virginia (6:52.38) and Washington (6:54.20).
The first varsity four of coxswain Kassandra Budzik, Jillian Byron, Tea Vrtlar, Lyndsey DuBose and Sarah Pedersen clocked a time of 7:57.78 to place fourth just 0.15 seconds behind San Diego's four. The first novice eight including coxswain Makenzie Harris, stroke Jessica Williams, Katie Ogg, Kara Turner, Angela Bumstead, Jazmin Smith, Lauren Moberg, Brenda Morlan-Villafuerta and Lucia Mueller crossed the finish line with a time of 7:10.57 for a fifth place finish. The second novice eight of coxswain Stephanie Bickford, stroke Taylar Williams, Schyler Gilmour, Heather Leighton, Lauren Barlow, Alex Buck, Amy Gross, Sara Walton and Christine Young placed third and completed the race in 7:06.02. Both novice eights later competed in the petite final with the second novice eights winning the final with a time of 7:08.27 while the first novice eight came in fifth, coming in at 7:16.59. The San Diego Crew Classic is the largest regatta in the world that provides a venue for collegiate, junior and masters athletes. This is the event's 39th showing. Texas concludes competition at the Crew Classic tomorrow at 10 a.m. Central. |
