Rowing notches five victories on day one at the Longhorn Invitational

AUSTIN, Texas - The Texas Rowing team kicked off the three-day Longhorn Invitational, with victories over Louisville and Wisconsin, Friday evening at Lady Bird Lake. The Horns posted wins in the varsity eight, second varsity eight, first varsity four, first novice eight and second novice eight races.

The Longhorns first varsity eight boat of coxswain Emma Dirks, stroke Jennifer VanderMaarel, Laurel McCaig, Jacqueline Gorcyca, Anna Thomson, Jelena Zunic, Jessica Glennie, Sydney Boyes and Felicia Izaguirre-Werner defeated Louisville in its race, 7:15.1-to-7:32.8.

In the second varsity eight race, the Horns' crew of coxswain Megan Kelly, stroke Charity McDonald, Courtney Nicklas, Hannah Moon, Chelsea Burns, Olivia Nail, Tea Vrtlar, Katarina Susac and Karli Sheahan bested the Cardinals, 7:30.1-to-7:52.0.

Texas' first varsity four boat of coxswain Katie Sayre, Taylor Parker, Tejana Lovric, Devon Clark and Sarah Pederson completed the race in 8:21.9 to down Louisville (8:50.3).

The Horns' first novice eight boat notched a victory against UL as well, winning the race, 7:59.1-to-8:25.3. Texas' second novice boat matched up with Wisconsin and defeated the Badgers, 8:11.5-to-8:19.4.

The Longhorn Invitational is a 2,000 meter dual-style race held annually on Lady Bird Lake. Texas and the seven other crews are competing in head-to-head races in each race of the weekend.

Texas returns to Lady Bird Lake on Saturday, March 19 when it hosts the second and third sessions of the Longhorn Invitational. The second session will begin at 8 a.m. Central, while the third session begins at 4 p.m. Central.
