Rowing posts three top-five finishes at Fighting Nutria

AUSTIN, Texas - UT Rowing placed all three of its varsity boats among the top- five and added top-11 finishes from its novice boats Saturday in the annual Fighting Nutria on Lady Bird Lake. The Fighting Nutria is a friendly competition that pits UT's women's varsity and novice squads against their male counterparts from Texas Crew, among others. UT's varsity 8+ boat "A" featuring coxswain Kassie Budzik, stroke Brenna Coldren, Jessica Smith, Sara Walton, Schyler Gilmour, Lyndsey DuBose, Emily Jones, Katie Trovato and Chelsea Burns took third place on the eight-kilometer course in 30 minutes, 27 seconds. UT varsity 8+ boat "B" with coxswain Kenna Harris, stroke Kim Gorcyca, Laurel McCaig, Olivia Nail, Casey Redman, Kara Turner, Victoria Bujala, Audrey Springer- Wilson and Tea Vrtlar took fourth place in 30:39. UT varsity 8+ boat "C" featuring coxswain Rachel Donnelly, stroke Melanie Eckert, Jessica Glennie, Taylor Dorsey, Angela Bumstead, Abbey Wilkowski, Kimmie Winder, Heather Leighton and Shari Singh took fifth overall in 31:27. UT's first novice 8+ boat featuring coxswain Christine Young, stroke Lucy Ellis, Rachel Smith, Danette Higginbotham, Kathryn Hemmert, Taylor Martin, Kathryn McElhinney, Hollis Scheffler and April Brown paced Texas' novice contingent by taking ninth in 32:40. Texas resumes competition on Friday, Feb. 22 when it takes on Bates College in a scrimmage on Lady Bird Lake. UT's next regular-season regatta comes Saturday, March 2 when it competes in the Heart of Texas on Lady Bird Lake.
