Fifth annual Weis Cup set to tee off Sunday

Nov. 7, 2009

AUSTIN, Texas -- The 2009 edition of the Weis Cup will take place Sunday morning at The University of Texas Golf Club. Making its debut in 2005, the Weis Cup pits the Women's Golf team against Longhorn Letterwinners.

The alumni team retained the Cup last year as the teams split matches.  The current Longhorn squad last defeated its predecessors for the team title in 2005, with the alumni team winning in 2006 and 2007.

This year's 12-member alumni team boasts four players that are currently playing on the professional women's golf circuit via the LPGA, Duramed FUTURES and Legends Tours. Kate Golden, Cindy Figg-Currier and Charlotta Sorenstam all hold status on the LPGA scene, while Lisa Ferrero has dual status as a non-exempt Tour player and full member of the Duramed FUTURES Tour.

The Weis Cup is named in honor of Pat Weis who served as Texas' first women's golf head coach. Weis started the UT women's golf program in 1969 as a club team, before it earned varsity status in 1973. Under Weis, the Longhorns earned seven SWC titles and finished in the Top 10 nationally 11 times. The 1991 recipient of the Gladys Palmer Award, the highest honor bestowed by the National Golf Coaches Association, Weis earned five conference Coach of the Year awards, was selected National Coach of the Year in 1987 and 1988 and coached 11 All-Americans during her stint as head coach.

The Weis Cup is set to begin at 10 a.m. Sunday morning.
