Women's Golf improves in final round at Derby Invitational
AUBURN, Ala. -- Behind seven-over par efforts from UT sophomore Caney Hines (San Antonio, Texas) and freshman Alex Richards (Austin, Texas), Texas completed the second and final round of the Auburn Tiger-Derby Invitational shooting 14 strokes fewer than its opening round at the par 72, 6,310 yard Auburn University Club. The Longhorns finished in 17th place at 78-over par while host Auburn claimed the tournament at 18-over par. Auburn's Marisa Milligan took medalist honors at one-over par.
Richards finished in the top 40 despite needing two more strokes to finish her second round than her opening round. The UT freshman carded a seven-over 79 after shooting a five-over 77 on Saturday to finish the tournament in a tie for 39th place. Hines, one of three Longhorns who improved in the second round, also carded a seven-over 79 to finish the tournament at 23-over par and in a tie for 82nd place. Notably, Hines needed nine fewer strokes to complete the second round after shooting an 88 on Saturday.
Sophomore Kristin Walla (Aspen, Colo.) also fared better in the second round, shooting a nine-over 81 to join Hines in a tie for 82nd place at 23-over par. Freshman Brittany Tomerlin (San Angelo, Texas) improved dramatically in the final round, shaving seven strokes off of her opening round to card a nine-over 81 and tie for 85th place at 25-over par.
Junior Angela Akins (Horseshoe Bay, Texas) finished the second round at 15 over to complete the tournament in a tie for 85th place at 25-over par. Texas completes the fall tournament season on Nov. 22 and 23 at the Aloha Purdue Collegiate Invitational in Poipu Kuai, Hawaii.
