Women's Golf places third at Franklin Street Partners Invitational

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The 10th-ranked University of Texas women's golf team finished third at the Franklin Street Partners Inviational (Finley Golf Course: Par 72, 6,285 yards) on Sunday, Oct. 10 after shooting their second-consecutive 296 (+8) to finish the tournament at 29-over-par (301-296-296=893). Duke repeated as champions of the tournament with a one-over-par 865, nine strokes better than second-place Auburn. Senior Lisa Ferrero (Lodi, Calif.) was the top Longhorn finisher in sixth place at two-over-par (74-71-73=218), six strokes behind medalist Maria Martinez of Auburn, who shot a final-round 71 to nip Duke's Brittany Lang by one stroke at four-under-par.

"I feel like we are right on the verge of some good things," said Texas head coach Susan Watkins. "We need to start scoring under par more frequently and more consistently, but we had a good tournament and I'm encouraged by what I'm seeing out of our players."

Freshman Kelley Louth (Victoria, Texas) was the other Longhorn to finish in the Top 10, tying for ninth place at five-over-par (72-75-74=221), after carding a two-over-par 74 in the final round. Senior Perry Swenson (Charlotte, N.C.) carded a seven-over-par 79 on Sunday to tie for 14th place with Texas A&M's Christa Spedding at 10-over-par.

Junior Devan Andersen (Guadalajra, Mexico) and sophomore Julia Best (Bulverde, Texas) tied for 30th place at 17-over-par. Andersen (80-78-75=233) shot a three-over-par 75 on Sunday, improving her score each day of the tournament. Best (80-79-74=233) matched her best round of the season with a final-round 74.

Up next, the Longhorns will travel to Palo Alto, Calif. to compete in the Stanford-Pepsi Women's Intercollegiate at the Stanford Golf Course from Friday, Oct. 17 to Sunday, Oct. 19.
