CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The University of Texas women's golf team sits in eighth place after Day 1 of the Lady Tar Heel Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C., led by a career-low score of 71 from junior Julia Best.
The Longhorns have a combined score of 307, 13 strokes of the pace set my first place Duke with 294. Vanderbilt, Auburn and Virginia are all in a tie for second place with identical 300's, while Wake Forest rounds out the top five with 302.
Best's score of 71 came off nines of 33 and 38. She totaled four birdies, including three in her front nine 33. She sits in a tie for third place, only one stroke off the lead of the carded 70 from both Anna Grzebien of Duke and Leah Wigger of Virginia.
It is the second consecutive week Best has opened the tournament with a career-low score. At the team's opening tournament, the Mason Randolph in Nashville, Tenn., she shot 73 to lead the team.
Freshman Caney Hines sits in a tie for 14th with a score of 75, sophomore Brittany Givilancz is tied for 50th with a carded 80 in her first action of the season. Fellow freshman Kristin Walla sits in a tie for 59th with a score of 81 and sophomore Kelley Louth rounds out the Texas five tied for 66th place with a score of 82.
