SUNRIVER, Ore. -- The University of Texas Women's Golf team opened its fall season by shooting a combined 301 at the Meadows Golf Course (Par 71, 6,312 yards) on Monday, Sept. 20. At 17-over-par, the Longhorns finished the first round in 15th place.

"I expect us to play much better over the next two days," explained head coach Susan Watkins. "We need to relax and focus on hitting more fairways and greens."

Senior Lisa Ferrero (Lodi, Calif.) and junior Devan Andersen (Guadalajara, Mexico) are tied for 33rd at 3-over-par. Ferrero's round included one birdie and three bogeys, while Andersen had two birdies and five bogeys.

Freshman Kelley Louth (Victoria, Texas), playing in her first collegiate tournament, shot a 4-over-par 75 that included one birdie and five bogeys. Sophomore Julia Best (Bulverde, Texas) struggled on the front nine, but shot even par on the back nine to finish with a seven-over-par 78. Senior Perry Swenson (Charlotte, N.C.) shot a 12-over-par 83, but will be counted on over the next two days to make a contribution to the team score.

Duke currently leads after the first day of play with a combined one-under-par 283. Duke's Brittany Lang took the individual lead with a seven-under-par 64.
