Women's Golf starters named for Nashville
AUSTIN, Texas -- Head Texas women's golf coach Susan Watkins named her five starters for the team's first competition at the Mason Rudolph Championship in Nashville, Tenn. On Sept. 23-25 sophomore Kelley Louth (Victoria, Texas), juniors Julia Best (Bulverde, Texas) and Ashley Prust (Englewood, Colo.), and freshmen Caney Hines (San Antonio, Texas) and Kristin Walla (Aspen, Colo.) will enter the field for Texas.
Last season, UT finished sixth at the Mason Rudolph with Louth leading as a true freshman, scoring a nine-over 225 after three rounds and finishing tied for 33rd. Best also competed last season in Nashville, recording a season-low 74 in the opening round despite finishing T59th with a 14 over par 230.
Louth and Best battled it out on the final day of qualifying Friday for the No. 1 spot, with Louth finishing on top. Rookie Hanes will get the call in the No. 3 slot, followed by Prust and fellow first-year Walla.
Prust will be looking to improve her standing this season after seeing action in four tournaments in 2004-05. A strong competitor, she finished with an 81.3 strokes per round average and a low round of 74 at the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational.
The talented rookie duo will look to prove their mettle in this first action wearing burnt orange and white after successful high school campaigns. Hanes is a two-time AJGA All-American, while the athletic Walla was an all-state golfer and skier.
The UT women will head to Chapel Hill for their second tournament of the fall season on Oct. 7-9 before returning home for the Weis Cup Alumni matches on Oct. 29 in Austin and finish with the Derby Invitational in Auburn, Ala. on Nov. 4-6.
