Stephens tied for 69th after opening round of U.S. Women's Amateur Championship

BARRINGTON, R.I. – Texas junior Haley Stephens carded a 4-over-par 75 in the opening round of the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship at Rhode Island Country Club on Monday and is tied for 69th place. Stephens’ round included six birdies and eight bogeys. The incoming junior was even on Rhode Island C.C.’s three Par 3’s, +3 on 13 Par 4’s and +1 on two Par 5’s. South Korea’s Jihee Kim shot a 5-under-par 66 to take a two-stroke lead following Monday’s first round of stroke play. After a second day of stroke play Tuesday, the U.S. Women’s Amateur field will be reduced to 64 players for match play. The first round of match play is scheduled for Wednesday, the second and third rounds will be played Thursday, the quarterfinals will be played Friday and the semifinal matches will be played Saturday. The Women’s Amateur concludes with the 36-hole championship final Sunday. Stephens will tee off in Tuesday’s second round at 6 a.m. Central. For complete scoring updates, go to USGA.org.
