AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas women's golf head coach Susan Watkins announced the addition of Angela Akins (Horseshoe Bay, Texas/Marble Falls HS) for the 2006-07 year. Akins transfers to Texas after spending last year at TCU in Fort Worth, Texas.
Akins joins Angela Richards (Austin, Texas/Lake Travis HS), Raelyn Smith (Odessa, Texas/Permian HS) and Brittany Tomerlin (San Angelo, Texas/San Angelo Central HS) on next year's squad, all three incoming freshman signed earlier with Texas.
Akins won 10 high school tournaments and finished in the top-3 on 31 occasions in junior competition. A four-time district MVP and tournament medalist (2001-04), Akins was a Wendy's High School Heisman state finalist as a senior in 2004 at Marble Falls HS.
A four-time academic all-district honoree (2001-04), Akins will continue a strong tradition of women's golfers with great academic and athletic backgrounds.
Akins' father, Marty Akins, was an all-America quarterback for The University of Texas (1972-75) and 1995 UT Hall of Honor inductee. An accomplished lawyer, Marty Akins was a Texas Democratic Party gubernatorial candidate in 2001 and is currently the head men's and women's golf coach for Huston-Tillotson University's reinstated golf program.
