Vandermade claims Investors Group Amateur title in Ontario

BELLEVILLE, Ontario -- Incoming University of Texas freshman Nicole Vandermade captured the Investors Group Women's Amateur Title last week for her second win of the season. The future Longhorn and Junior Spring Classic champion defeated five-time champion and day-two leader Mary Ann Lapointe by one stroke at the Bay of Quinte Country Club in Belleville, Ontario.

The Brantford, Ontario native started the final round trailing Lapointe by two strokes but a birdie on the first hole and consistent play throughout the day allowed her to put pressure on Lapointe, who bogeyed holes 4 and 5. Vandermade's birdie on the par-five, 458-yard ninth hole pushed her into the lead where she managed to hold off the Ontario Women's Amateur Champion for the victory with a three-round score of 216.

"It was incredible to go up against Mary Ann," said Vandermade of the match. "It feels great to be here and hold this trophy. It's definitely an honor to have my name up there with all the great players like Marlene (Streit, a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame) and Alena (Sharp)," she added.

Earlier this summer, Vandermade carded a 69 to hold the first-round lead at the 36-hole CN Canadian Women's Tour tournament in London, Ontario. The 18-year-old fired a second-round 77 for a fifth-place finish in the event.

Vandermade will join the Texas squad this fall after representing Ontario at the Royale Cup Canadian Women's Amateur Championship at the end of July in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
