Women's Golf represented in this week's U.S. Women's Open
July 6, 2009 Ferrero (’05), Fischer (’91) and Olivencia (’04), who each advanced to the Open from the Wilmette Sectional, are three of the 125 professionals teeing it up on Saucon Valley’s Old Course that will play at par 71 and 6,740 yards. Of the 31 amateurs in the field, Stephens gained entry as the first alternate out of the Sanford Sectional. A record number of 1,278 entries were submitted for this year’s Open qualifying. Stephens, one of Texas head coach Martha Richards’ four incoming freshmen this fall, is ranked as the No. 28 prospect in the nation by Golfweek and is 36th in the AJGA Polo Rankings. The 2008 South Carolina Match Play Champion also won the 2008 Carolinas Girls' Championship. Stephens finished third in the 2008 Golfweek Junior Invitational and was named the 2007 Carolina Junior Player of the Year. Steeped in history and tradition as the longest-running major championship in women's professional golf, the 2009 U.S. Women's Open boasts the largest total purse in the sport at $3.25 million.
