Pressel named Big 12 Conference Women's Golf Player of the Year

IRVING, Texas -- Texas Women’s Golf sophomore Madison Pressel has been named the Big 12 Conference Player of the Year, the league announced Thursday. Pressel claimed medalist honors and set a Big 12 Championship record with a 54-hole score of 8-under-par 208 (71-66-71) on Sunday. Her second-round 66 was also an event record. She has four top-10 finishes this season, including a fourth-place tie at the PING ASU Invitational. Overall, the sophomore has finished in the top 20 in six of her eight starts this season. Pressel is currently ranked 38th in the nation by Golfweek/Sagarin with a 72.56 rating. Pressel becomes the third Big 12 Conference Player of the Year in school history, joining Heather Bowie (1997) and Janice Olivencia (2002). In addition to the Player of the Year honor, Pressel was named to the 2011 All-Big 12 Team. The 10 honorees were identified by using the top-10 highest-ranked student-athletes according to the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings following the Big 12 Championship. Colorado's Jessica Wallace earned the Newcomer of the Year award. Iowa State's Christie Martens won Big 12 Coach of the Year in a vote by the league's head coaches. The Player and Newcomer of the Year awards are automatically selected as the highest ranked individuals from the most recent Golfweek/Sagarin rankings following the Big 12 Championship. Pressel and the Longhorns will return to action at the NCAA Central Regional Championship in South Bend, Ind., May 5-7.
