Best named to All-Big 12 Women's Golf team
DALLAS -- Junior Julia Best was named to the 2006 All-Big 12 Women's Golf Second Team as announced by the conference Friday and selected by the league's head coaches. Best recently finished a career-best eighth place at the 2006 Big 12 Championships. This is her first All-Big 12 honor. The Bulverde, Texas native is leading the Longhorns with a career-best 76.54 per round average after playing in all of Texas' eight events this season. Best posted a career-best 12 over par score of 228 at the 2006 Big 12 tournament as she led all Longhorns with her eighth-place finish. Texas finished seventh at the tourney. Texas A&M junior Ashley Knoll was named Big 12 Player of the Year and her head coach Jeanne Sutherland received Coach of the Year honors. Oklahoma State freshman Pernilla Lindberg was honored as the 2006 Newcomer of the Year. Best has come on strong in her last four outings, leading UT with top finishes at the Betsy Rawls Invitational (T-7th), PING/ASU Invitational (T-32nd), Susie Maxwell Berning Golf Classic (T-6th) and the Big 12 Championships (8th). On the year, Best has finished in the top 35 four times. At the 2006 Susie Maxwell Berning Classic, Best totaled a six-over par 222 for her best three-round total of her career. Best shot a season- and career-low score of 71 in the first round of the Lady Tar Heel Invitational on Oct. 7 in Chapel Hill, N.C. where she finished tied for 49th (233, +17). Best was a 2005 Big 12 All-Big 12 Academic Second Team honoree as a sophomore. She finished tied for 26th at the 2005 Big 12 Championships in her first trip to the league tournament. Best and the Longhorns are hoping for an at-large berth to the NCAA Regionals, which will take place May 11-13 at one of three sites: the Traditions Club in College Station, Texas; Bryan Park in Brown's Summit, N.C.; or the Washington National Golf Club in Auburn, Washington. The NCAA Regional bids will be announced on Monday, May 1.
