Best cards final round 74 to help Women's Golf finish third at Susie Maxwell
NORMAN, Okla. -- Led by junior Julia Best's (Bulverde, Texas) tie for sixth-place, The University of Texas women's golf team finished third at the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic at the Jimmie Austin University of Oklahoma Golf Course in Norman, Okla. on Monday. Texas finished with a season low total of 41-over par 905 after three rounds and closed with a third round score of 21-over par 309. The Longhorns' first round total of six-over par 294 was a 2006 season low score for 18 holes. Oklahoma State won the tournament with a three-over par score of 867. In second with a score of 28-over par was SMU while Nebraska finished fourth with a 42-over par 906 and Kansas State finished with a 47-over par 911 to round out the top-five. Best finished the tournament with a final round two-over par 74 to finish in a tie for sixth-place and a score of six-over par 222 (73+75+74). For Best it was her career low total for 36 holes and her third consecutive tournament where she posted a lower score than the last (229 at Betsy Rawls and 227 at PING/ASU Invite). It also marks Best's second top-10 finish of the season after she tied for seventh in Austin at the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational on March 17-19. Senior Devan Andersen (Guadalajara, Mexico) finished tied for 17th after posting rounds of 75, 76 and 75 for a three round total of 10-over par 151. It was a season-best finish and score for Andersen. Finishing in 19th-place was sophomore Kelley Louth (Victoria, Texas) with a final three round score of 11-over par 227 (73+77+77) while sophomore Brittany Givilancz (Weslaco, Texas) tied for 44th-place with a score of 17-over par 233 (73+76+84). Freshman Caney Hines (San Antonio, Texas) was the fifth player for UT and tied for 55th with a 20-over par score of 236 (78+75+83). Next up for UT is the Big 12 Championships hosted by Nebraska in Lincoln, Neb. The championships will be held from April 17-19 at the Country Club of Lincoln. This marks the first time Nebraska will host the women's league event.
