Women's Golf preview: UCF Challenge
March 6, 2009 UP NEXT: The Texas women’s golf team will travel back to the Sunshine State for the three-day, 54-hole UCF Challenge in Sorrento, Fla., on March 8-10 (Sunday-Tuesday). The par-72, 6,301-yard RedTail Golf Club will play host to the 18-team field. Tee times will begin at 8 a.m. Central on Sunday and Monday, and 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday. LIVE SCORING: Fans can follow the Longhorns in action at the UCF Challenge online at GolfStat.com. TEXAS LINEUP: Second-year head coach Martha Richards will send the following lineup to the Central District Invitational: senior Kelley Louth (Victoria, Texas), senior Caney Hines (San Antonio, Texas), senior Kristin Walla (Aspen, Colo.), junior Shannon Fish (Spring, Texas) and freshman Nicole Vandermade (Brantford, Ontario). THE FIELD: Alabama (5), Arizona (20), Arizona State (1), Auburn (8), Duke (9), Florida (28), Florida State (57), LSU (11), North Carolina (15), Oklahoma State (6), Pepperdine (12), Purdue (13), Tennessee (37), Texas (34), UCF (42), UCLA (2), USC (3) and Vanderbilt (14). Rankings based on latest Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index (March 1). TOURNAMENT NOTES: The 2009 field includes 13 of the Top 20 teams in the nation, 29 of the Top 50 individuals and 44 of the Top 100 (March 1 Golfweek rankings)…Members of the 2009 UCF Challenge field have combined to win 19 of the 27 NCAA Championships all-time, including each of the last seven…Schools in the field have also produced 18 of the 27 NCAA Individual Champions, including current UCF head coach Emilee Klein (Arizona State, 1994)…This is the third year of the event and the second year at RedTail…Each of the last two NCAA Champions has played in the UCF Challenge during their regular seasons (Duke in 2007 and USC in 2008)...Duke has won both UCF Challenges to date with a 2008 score of -13 (282-282-287=851), nine strokes better than second place Purdue (-4)…Duke has also produced both UCF Challenge individual medalists (Amanda Blumenherst in 2007 and Alison Whitaker in 2008).
