Women's Golf preview: UCF Challenge

UP NEXT: The Texas Women’s Golf team will open the spring season at the UCF Challenge in Sorrento, Fla., on Sunday, Feb. 13. The 54-hole tournament will conclude on Tuesday, Feb. 15.

LIVE SCORING: Fans can follow the Longhorns in action online at http://www.golfstat.com.

COURSE: The RedTail Golf Club will be set up to play at par-72, 6,319-yards.

PLAY: All three rounds will begin in a shotgun-start format. The first two rounds on Sunday and Monday will tee off at 7:30 a.m. Central, while Tuesday’s final round is scheduled to begin at 7:45 a.m.

TEXAS LINEUP: Head coach Martha Richards’ first lineup of the spring is led by sophomore Madison Pressel (Boca Raton, Fla.) in the No. 1 position. Sophomore Haley Stephens (Greer, S.C.) will compete in the second spot, while junior Nicole Vandermade (Brantford, Ontario) is slated No. 3. Sophomore Katelyn Sepmoree (Tyler, Texas) and freshman Rebecca Lee-Bentham (Scarborough, Ontario) round out the four and five positions, respectively. Junior Megan Rosenfeld (Plano, Texas) is slated to compete as an individual.

MEET THE LINEUP:
No. 1 – Madison Pressel
-leads the Horns with a 73.78 stroke average (nine rounds) this year
-recorded career-best ties for ninth place in each of the last two fall outings (Dale McNamara Invitational and Landfall Tradition)
-making her first appearance in the No. 1 spot this season


 

 

No. 2 – Haley Stephens
-led Texas on the individual leaderboard in a tie for 37th at the season-opening NCAA Fall Preview (Sept. 13-15) with rounds of 73-73-75 (+5)
-ranks sixth nationally in accuracy by hitting 91.5 percent of fairways
-leads Texas in first-round scoring average (72.25)
-one of three players to appear in all five lineups for the Longhorns (Sepmoree, Vandermade)
-one of three players to card a low round of 70 during the fall season (Sepmoree, Vandermade)
 
No. 3 – Nicole Vandermade
-recorded a season-best eighth-place finish in her most recent outing at the Landfall Tradition (Oct. 22-24)
-is the only Texas player this season to eclipse 30 birdies; leads UT with 35 through 12 rounds
-one of three players to appear in all five lineups for the Longhorns (Sepmoree, Stephens)
-one of three players to card a low round of 70 during the fall season (Sepmoree, Stephens)

No. 4 – Katelyn Sepmoree
-recorded a career-best fifth-place finish at the Dale McNamara Invitational (Oct. 11-13)
-leads Texas in final-round scoring average (73.25)
-one of three players to appear in all five lineups for the Longhorns (Stephens, Vandermade)
-one of three players to card a low round of 70 during the fall season (Stephens, Vandermade)

No. 5 – Rebecca Lee-Bentham
-third career collegiate start
-recorded a season-best 76 (+4) in the final round of the NCAA Fall Preview (Sept. 15)

THE FIELD: 17 teams: No. 65 Augusta State, No. 49 Baylor, No. 68 Coastal Carolina, No. 47 East Carolina, No. 62 Georgia State, No. 128 Illinois State, No. 63 Kennesaw State, No. 57 Kentucky, No. 80 Memphis, No. 41 Minnesota, No. 31 Ole Miss, No. 35 South Carolina, No. 16 TEXAS, No. 14 Tulane, No. 113 UCF, No. 103 USF and No. 59 UT-San Antonio (rankings as of the Dec. 3 edition of the Golfweek/Sagarin Index).

LAST TIME OUT: The University of Texas Women's Golf team closed the fall season with its second-consecutive top-three finish at the Landfall Tradition (Oct. 22-24, 2010). The Longhorns' (291-302-297) 54-hole total of 26-over 890 placed them third in the 18-team field that included nine Top 25 programs. Overall, Texas bested seven teams rated higher in the Oct. 17 edition of the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings, including No. 5 Duke, No. 8 Virginia, No. 13 Wake Forest, No. 16 Michigan State, No. 19 Notre Dame, No. 22 South Carolina and No. 23 Oklahoma State. The Longhorns entered the tournament ranked No. 29.

Junior Nicole Vandermade (73-71-76) finished in eighth place at 4-over 220 for her best fall finish, and sophomore Madison Pressel (73-74-74=221) collected her second tie for ninth place in as many tournaments. Sophomore Haley Stephens recorded UT's low final-round score on the Country Club of Landfall Pete Dye Course with a 1-over 73. Stephens (71-80-73) tied for 17th place at 8-over 224.

LAST TIME IN THE EVENT: Kelley Louth (69-73-72) carded an even-par 72 in the final round of the UCF Challenge (March 8-10, 2009) to finish in a team-best tie for 10th place at 2-under 214.  As a team, Texas (291-297-299) finished in 15th place at 23-over 887.
