Feb. 11, 2009
AUSTIN, Texas -- Three former Longhorns are set to tee off at the LPGA’s first event of the year on Thursday, Feb 12. The SBS Open at Turtle Bay in Kahuku, Oahu, Hawaii, is a 54-hole event that will be contested on the par-72, 6,582-yard Arnold Palmer Course. Kate Golden, Kelli Kuehne, and Heather Bowie-Young will be teeing it up as three of Texas’ eight former players who are currently members of the LPGA Tour.
While at Texas, Bowie-Young won an individual NCAA Championship in 1997 when she was also named Big 12 Player of the Year. In 2005, she made up five strokes on Gloria Park en route to her first career victory at the Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic. She has 24 Top-10 finishes in her career.
Golden, a former All-American, won three college tournaments during her time at Texas. She has competed on Tour since 1992, and her lone career victory occurred at the 2001 State Farm Classic with the help of her first career hole-in-one. A career-low round of 63 helped her hold off Annika Sorenstam in the final round for the victory.
Kuehne, a Texas Sports Hall of Famer, won two USGA Women’s Amateur titles as well as one British Amateur Championship and one USGA Girls’ Junior Amateur. While at Texas she earned First-Team All-American honors. After turning pro in 1996, she won her first LPGA event in 1999 at the Corning Classic. Kuehne has 25 Top-10 finishes in her career.
Texas players have earned $14,829,511 throughout the history of the tour. Sherri Steinhauer leads the former Texas players at 17th on the LPGA Career Earnings list with $5,929,838.
