PALOS VERDES, Calif. -- The 17th-ranked Texas women's golf team opened its spring season by shooting a combined 315 (+31) at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge (Palos Verdes Golf Club: Par 71) on Monday, Feb. 7. The 315 leaves the Longhorns in a tie for 12th place, 26 strokes behind leader UCLA. Duke's Brittany Lang sits atop the individual leaderboard with a three-under-par 68.
"We got off to a rough start today," said Texas head coach Susan Watkins. "I was pleased with the way Kelley (Louth) played today and I know Jordan (Craig) was a little nervous. Our seniors need to lead this team, but they are going to have to play a lot better. There is no doubt in my mind that we will come back and play much better golf over the next two days."
Freshman Kelley Louth (Victoria, Texas) finished with Texas' best round of the day, a six-over-par 77, which has her in a tie for 41st place. Senior Mariana Salazar (Torreon, Mexico), playing in her first tournament of the year, and classmate Perry Swenson (Charlotte, N.C.) are tied for 56th place after shooting a pair of eight-over-par 79s.
Senior Lisa Ferrero (Lodi, Calif.) shot a nine-over-par 80 and sits in a tie for 64th place, while freshman Jordan Craig (Connellsville, Pa.) carded a 17-over-par 88 in the first round.
The Longhorns will hit the course for second-round action at 11 a.m. (Central), grouped with Michigan State and UNLV.
