Women's Golf sweeps Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational team crown, medalist and runner-up honors
Nov. 2, 2011
AUSTIN, Texas - The Texas Women's Golf team concluded the fall season with a win at the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational at The University of Texas Golf Club where senior Nicole Vandermade and junior Madison Pressel finished first and second, respectively. UT (288-293-299=880, +16) fired a final-round 299 to cruise to a 12-stroke win over runners-up Pepperdine (297-299-296=892, +28), Florida (285-304-303) and Tulsa (293-301-298). The victory marks the Longhorns' second of the fall season after claiming the Texas A&M "Mo" Morial (Sept. 11-13).
The Betsy Rawls team crown is Texas' seventh overall win at its annual home tournament and first since 1999. Vandermade is the first Longhorn to earn medalist honors since Jessica Reese accomplished the feat in 2003. UT has produced nine individual champions since the tournament's inaugural year in 1974.
Beginning Wednesday's final round tied for sixth place, Vandermade (72-73-69) overcame a four-stroke deficit for the first win of her collegiate career. She produced back-to-back birdies on the second and third holes before making a bogey at four and a third birdie on five. Vandermade dropped to as many as 4-under with another pair of subpars on nine and 10, but bogeys on 12 and 16 cost her two strokes. She capped off her victory with a 15-foot birdie putt on 18 to finish at 3-under for the day and 2-under 214 through three rounds.
Pressel (72-71-72) overcame a bumpy trio of holes midway through her final round to produce an even-par scorecard and finish in second place at 1-under 215. After birdies on the first, second and fifth holes, she made back-to-back bogeys on six and seven and capped off the difficult stretch with a double bogey on eight. Pressel secured her final birdie of the round on the par-3 12th hole.
Junior Katelyn Sepmoree (77-74-78) finished tied for 35th place at 13-over 229. Juniors Desiree Dubreuil (72-75-83) and Haley Stephens (72-79-80) trailed by one and two strokes, respectively, to finish tied for 39th and 47th places.

On today's round: I thought they did a great job battling the wind. It was tough out there the last two days. It was going hard enough that it made picking a club very difficult and also what I noticed was putting was really difficult to get the speed right. The greens are fast and the golf course played pretty fair. It was a great test. I was really pleased with their patience and perseverance. I think that made all the different for us.
On how winning bolsters confidence:I think they are confident. I think thatcomes from the fact we have done a lot of great work and they have done a lot of great work over the years. You look at someone like Nicole who just keeps getting better, so more than confidence we have done great work. We can nowtrust that work. When you trust your work and play well, confidence is a byproduct of good performance. What we have really been good about is doing great work and trusting that because of that we have had great performances. They should feel good about the work that they are doing and the direction they are headed.
Senior Nicole Vandermade
On winning the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational: It feels amazing. It has been a long time coming. I've been working really hard. I knew my game was there
On winning an event on her 'home' course: It is awesome. My parents are both here and all my peers are here in addition to the whole team. It feels amazing.
On Texas' team victory: It feels awesome to have played as well as we did. It helps playing a lot of rounds out here. Our course knowledge with the pin locations especially helps with this wind out here the last couple of days. This gives us a lot of momentum going into the spring season
On Texas' confidence: We are getting more and more confident with each tournament. It helped winning the Big 12 Championship last year. That gave us a lot of confidence in getting a win and then we won at Texas A&M. We had a couple of just all right tournaments in the middle then we capped it off with a great run here.
Junior Madison Pressel
On Texas being on the national golf scene once again: I came here to help build this program, to bring Texas Women's Golf back on the map. Wehave all done such a great job and worked so well together to make that dream happen, and winning is a result of our hard work and dedication.
On Texas players finishing first and second: It is awesome to be able to get the win as a team then be able to take the one and two individual finishes. It doesn't happen very often and I am so proud of Nicole. We both played well and she finished on top today.
