Vandermade and Fish continue to lead Women's Golf team at Stanford Intercollegiate

Oct. 18, 2008

PALO ALTO, Calif. -- University of Texas freshman Nicole Vandermade (72-71=143, +1) and junior Shannon Fish (72-71=143) continue to lead the women's golf team at the Stanford Intercollegiate, as the pair stands at 1-over-par 143 and in a tie for 17th place after two rounds of play. As a team, the Longhorns (295-288=583, +15) are in 12th place after carding a second-round 4-over 288 and matching the raw-score low-round of the 2007-08 season.

Vandermade experienced a bit of déjà vu on Saturday, as she began her second round with a bogey on the 10th hole - her first of the day - just as she did in Friday's opening round. She then found red numbers on the 12th and 14th holes before bogeying the 18th to make the turn at even. Her third birdie opportunity came on the fifth hole of the par-71, 6,092-yard Stanford Golf Course to again drop below par, but an ensuing bogey on the sixth hole put her back at even where she remained for the final three holes.

Fish made the turn at 1-under after a pair of birdies and a lone bogey on the back nine. After remaining in red digits through the first two holes on the front nine, Fish jumped to 2-over with bogeys on holes three, five and six. The Spring, Texas, native rebounded with back-to-back birdies on the seventh and eighth holes to finish at even par, again knotting her and Vandermade on the leaderboard for the second-consecutive day.

Senior Caney Hines (76-72=148, +6) carded a 1-over 72 to stand tied for 52nd, while senior Kelley Louth (81-74=155, +13) finished the day tied for 76th place with a 3-over 74. Senior Kristin Walla (75-84=159, +17) rounded out the Longhorns at 13-over 84 and tied for 82nd after 36 holes.

UCLA (277-285=565, -6) holds a three-stroke advantage over current runner-up Southern California (279-286=565, -3), while Oklahoma State (278-289=567, -1) rounds out the top three teams in the 16-team field.

Oklahoma State's Caroline Masson (65-70=135, -7) stands atop the leaderboard at 7-under 135, while UCLA's Ryan O'Toole (72-66=138, -4) fired a 5-under 66 in the second round to improve to a tie for second place at 4-under with Southern California's Lizette Salas (66-72=138).

Sunday's final round begins at 9:30 a.m. Central time in a split-tee format with Texas players teeing off of No. 10 at 9:35 a.m.

POST-ROUND QUOTES
HEAD COACH Martha Richards

On the team's overall performance: This team is putting it together on the course. I was proud of them yesterday, and today they stepped it up a notch. This was hands down our best team finish in terms of how each individual finished her round. We're starting to put together complete rounds, and as a result we're seeing some lower numbers on the scorecards. Everyone is starting to look comfortable and it was a fun day to watch these ladies play.

On Vandermade and Fish:
Both Nicole (Vandermade) and Shannon (Fish) have been playing well this week. Nicole had a few bogeys that looked like pretty easy up-and-downs, and if she can correct that, then she's the kind of player that can go really low on this course tomorrow. Shannon's work on her short game is paying off for her, and today she was reaping the rewards of her efforts.
