Women's Golf finishes eighth in season-opening Cougar Classic
Sept. 14, 2009 HANAHAN, S.C. -- Texas Women's Golf freshmen Desiree Dubreuil (78-75-71=224, +8) and Haley Stephens (78-79-71=228, +12) shot final-round scores of 1-under-par 71 at the Cougar Classic to secure an eighth-place finish for the Longhorns (304-290-292=886, +22) in the season-opening event. Freshman Madison Pressel (73-72-76=221, +5) recorded Texas' top-individual finish in her collegiate debut with a tie for 30th place at 5-over 221. For both Dubreuil and Stephens, Monday's finale marked their best single-round scores in the 54-hole event at the par-72, 6,211-yard Yeamans Hall Golf Club. Dubreuil made par on her first 10 holes before bogeying the par-3, 136-yard third hole, her 11th of the day. After previously bogeying the fourth hole in Monday's first two rounds, Dubreuil found a birdie on the par-4 to return to even par. A final birdie on the par-5 seventh hole resulted in her 1-under scorecard and a three-round total of 8-over 224 to tie for 39th place. Stephens carded back-to-back birdies on the 14th and 15th holes after bogeying her first hole of the day to drop to 1-under through four holes. The freshman made a bogey on the fourth hole for the second-straight round before making a final birdie on the fifth hole for her best-round of the event and a tie for 54th place at 12-over 228. Pressel's final round included one birdie, two bogeys and her only double bogey of the tournament for a 4-over 76. Freshman Katelyn Sepmoree (75-74-76=225, +9) and sophomore Nicole Vandermade (82-69-74=225, +9) tied for 45th place at 9-over 225 with final-round scores of 76 and 74, respectively. Georgia (280-283-287=850, -14) held onto its' 36-hole lead and defeated runner-up Florida State (292-283-282=857, -7) by seven strokes. North Carolina (288-290-291=869, +5) took home third place at 5-over 869, while Georgia's Marta Silva Zamora (67-71-70=208, -8) earned medalist honors. The Longhorns will remain idle until Sept. 25 when they travel to Vanderbilt for the three-day Mason Rudolph Women's Invitational. Cougar Classic - Final Results Texas Players
