Vandermade cards even-par 72 in opening round of NCAA Women's Golf Championships

WILMINGTON, N.C. -- Sophomore Nicole Vandermade opened the first round of the 2010 NCAA Women's Golf Championships with an even-par 72 to pace Texas on the individual leaderboard in a tie for 20th place. As a team, the Longhorns are in 18th-place in the 24-team national championship field with an 11-over 299 after 18 holes of play at the Country Club of Landfall. Vandermade was the only UT player to finish at par or better on the par-72, 6,368-yard Pete Dye Course, and one of just 29 competitors in the 126-player national championship field to accomplish the feat. Despite playing in the fifth position for the Longhorns, Vandermade recorded a team-high three birdies on the opening day to accompany one of the five eagles recorded during Tuesday's action. Her subpar holes offset three bogeys and a double on the par-3 second hole, her 11th of the day. Freshman Haley Stephens, Texas' top finisher in the West Regional (May 6-8), finished the day two strokes behind Vandermade at 2-over 74, yet nearly a full stroke better than the first-round course average of 74.92. Stephens is tied for 49th place entering Wednesday's second round. Competing in her third-consecutive NCAA Championships, senior Shannon Fish turned in a 4-over 76 to tie for 72nd place. Freshmen Madison Pressel (77, +5) and Desiree Dubreuil (79, +7) are tied for 87th and 108th places, respectively, in their national championship debut. Southern California (282, -6) and Purdue (284, -4) were the only two teams to record red numbers as teams on Tuesday and sit atop the leaderboard in first and second places. Arizona State, UCLA and Duke are in a three-way tie for third at even-par 288.
The Longhorns will begin Wednesday's second round at 7 a.m. CT on the first hole. Texas will again play alongside Purdue and Auburn. Pairings will be refigured for both Thursday and Friday based on 36-holes team scores.
