March 15, 2013
AUGUSTA, Ga. -- The No. 25 Texas Women’s Golf team sits in third place after first-round action in the Lady Jaguar Intercollegiate at Forest Hills Golf Club after beginning the tournament with an 11-over-par 299. Senior Haley Stephens and sophomore Bertine Strauss carded opening-round scores of 1-over-par 73 to finish the day tied for fifth place on the individual leaderboard. Stephens played steady golf with three birdies and four bogeys on her first-round scorecard. She was 3-over through 16 holes, but back-to-back birdies on the closing holes of Forest Hills resulted in the 1-over scorecard. Strauss fought all day for her +1 round, as she battled seven bogeys with a team-high six birdies. She made three-straight subpars at Nos. 9-11 to dip to even before a sixth bogey on the 12th hole pushed her back over par. Strauss sank her sixth and final birdie on No. 15, but a subsequent bogey on the next hole pushed her back to +1 and she finished with two more pars. Senior Katelyn Sepmoree trails Stephens and Strauss by one stroke at even-par 72 and is tied for 12th place. Senior Desiree Dubreuil (79) and freshman Natalie Karcher (84) round out the Texas squad in ties for 43rd and 84th places, respectively. Vanderbilt (290, +2) holds a 5-stroke lead over the 18-team field, and Purdue is in second place at 7-over 295. Notre Dame (303) trails Texas by four strokes, and Coastal Carolina and East Tennessee State are tied for fifth place at 16-over 304.
