Fish and Vandermade lead Women's Golf after two rounds at the Central District Invitational

Feb. 16, 2009

PARRISH, Fla. -- Junior Shannon Fish (78-75=153, +9) and freshman Nicole Vandermade (78-75=153, +9) paced The University of Texas women’s golf team with second-round scores of 3-over-par 75 and are tied for 33rd place after 36 holes at the Central District Invitational.  The Longhorns (315-304=619, +43) shaved 11 strokes off of their first-round score of 315 and finished the day in 11th place with a 43-over 619.

Fish and Vandermade carded nearly identical scorecards in the opening round, as both struggled with bogeys on the River Wilderness Country Club’s lengthy par-4 holes and each succumbed to a double bogey in their morning rounds and finished at 6-over 78.

Beginning the afternoon on the eighth hole of the par-72, 6,099-yard course, Fish balanced three birdies on her first 10 holes with a birdie-bogey combination on the fourth and fifth holes to finish at 3-over for the round and 9-over for the day.  Vandermade finished with the same numbers on her scorecard in a second round that saw four bogeys, three birdies and another double bogey.

Senior Caney Hines (80-76=156, +12) is three strokes behind teammates Fish and Vandermade and tied for 45th at 12-over, while senior Kelley Louth (79-78=157, +13) is tied for 49th.  Senior Kristin Walla (81-78=159, +15) rounds out the Longhorns with a 15-over 159 and is tied for 55th place.

Auburn (284-295=579, +3) holds a 10-stroke lead over current runner-up LSU (292-297=589, +13) on the team leaderboard.  Purdue (305-286=591, +15) is in third place at 15-over 591 in the 15-team field.

The final round of the Central District Invitational will begin Tuesday morning at 7 a.m. CT with a shotgun start.

POST-ROUND QUOTES
Head Coach Martha Richards

On the team’s overall performance: We practiced at Onion Creek in Austin last weekend in two-club wind to prepare for the winds here in Florida, but I’m frustrated by today’s rounds because they didn’t reflect the preparations that we made.  We struggled in the wind this morning, and then we didn’t dig deep enough in the second round to turn things around the way we needed to.  I’m surprised by today’s scores because I thought we were ready for these conditions.  We simply didn’t adapt well.

On the play of Vandermade and Fish: Nicole and Shannon both the hit ball really well, especially in the second round.  Nicole managed herself much better with some good up-and-downs in the afternoon, but she had two three-putts on her final two holes that set her back a bit.
