Dec. 28, 2012
Hey Longhorn fans!!
Brady Sanders here. From all of us at Texas Women’s Basketball, I hope y’all had a relaxing and happy holiday! As for us, what a way to finish off 2012! This weekend the team is in San Diego, Calif., to play in the Maggie Dixon Surf ‘n Slam Classic on Dec. 28th and 30th. We arrived yesterday after a long day of holiday travel but were immediately welcomed by the warm sun. We’re feeling rested and relaxed after having a few days off and getting to see our friends and family and spent some time exchanging holiday stories. Then it was time to get down to business!
From the airport we headed to the Westin Hotel, our ‘home’ for the next couple days in San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter. We immediately noticed all of the shops and restaurants with every different type of food in the area and even an outdoor ice rink across the street from our hotel! But exploring would have to wait because we grabbed a quick bite to eat and then headed right to practice.
Game day was upon us before we knew it and everyone was so excited to get back into things when we woke up! We watched film this morning before lunch and just finished with shoot-around at the Jenny Craig Pavilion on the campus of the University of San Diego. After a little bit of down time we’ll eat pre-game meal as a team in the hotel and then it’s time to get ready to take on the Iowa Hawkeyes! The game tonight is at 8 p.m. in San Diego, which is 10 p.m. in Austin, so the coaches have been stressing plenty of rest as we get prepared for this game. But no matter the time, we are all thrilled to be together with our team again and to get to compete!
We will have a day in between our game tonight and the one we play on Sunday afternoon against either Central Michigan or San Diego, so tomorrow in addition to practice we are going to take advantage and do a little sightseeing. The highlight of the day? Getting to visit the famous San Diego Zoo! There has been a lot of anticipation among the girls since we saw this on our itinerary … brings us back to our childhood days!
Then it will be back to ‘focus’ mode as we get ready for our game on the 30th. Although we don’t know who we will be playing yet, we are comfortable with our preparation routines and will get ready the same way for either squad. Our team has already grown so much this season, especially those of us who played our first games in a Longhorn uniform just two months ago.
It’s hard to believe we are entering a new year and conference season is just around the corner! The two games we play here will not just be our last two of 2012 but also the last of our preseason schedule. It’s really going to be a great opportunity for some fine-tuning before we kick off Big 12 season next week. But all of the time we have put in since last summer gives us confidence and we are so ready to take on the challenges that 2013 will bring!
Thanks to you all for your support and for being behind us 100 percent! We’re incredibly grateful to have the best fans in the land and can’t wait to bring you home a pair of wins!
Hook ‘em and happy 2013!!!
Brady
